Statement by New Democrat Leader Jack Layton on Anti-Bullying Day
"Today New Democrats are proud to join Canadians across the country in marking Anti-Bullying Day.
Bullying is a serious problem that must be addressed. Nobody should live in fear for being an individual, different or standing out.
I congratulate CKNW (AM 980 in Vancouver) for promoting awareness on this serious issue and building a movement to educate Canadians. I especially acknowledge David Shepherd, Travis Price and their friends in Nova Scotia for their bravery to stand up to bullying when a fellow grade 9 student was being harassed. Their heroism is the inspiration behind CKNW’s campaign and I hope it will inspire other youth to speak up.
New Democrats will wear pink and send the message that bullying will not be tolerated.
On anti-bullying day, I am reminded of a famous quote by Tommy Douglas: courage, my friends; ‘tis not too late to build a better world."
